THE FÅRÖ DOCUMENTS

– a love story

”Being on Fårö I experienced a primordial sense of an untouched and pristine place. Love at first sight – which very rarely happens in real life.”

Both of Ingmar Bergman’s Fårö Documents are love letters to the island and its inhabitants.

In these documentary films, he is exploring Fårö in a different way than in his feature films. In these films the great drama is the vulneraility and impoverishment of the sparsely populated are. Interviewing and reflecting, Bergman displays a sincere concern for and great curiosity about the people who have lived and worked on the island for generations.

Fårö becomes the location for films with actors – world-renowned – just like their director. The islanders build film sets, houses, assist and and are extras. Gaining new knowledge, accepting new challenges. Many islanders get work and income, some short-term during a film production, others regularly for many years.

From 1967 Fårö is Ingmar Bergman’s fixed point. Later on he moves to Fårö and lives here permanently until his death in 2007.
